E coli infection- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama

Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria is a normal habitant of human gut and thus they are not harmful usually. Some strains (E. coli O157:H7) may cause difficulties such as pain in stomach, cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea. In severe cases, there may be bloody diarrhoea. A person can become infected by E. coli O157:H7 via water or food that are contaminated by the bacteria. Most of the cases need not any treatment.

Signs and symptoms

The person with E coli infection often experience diarrhoea (watery or blood mixed), stomach pain, tenderness of abdomen on palpation, nausea and vomiting within 3 or 4 days after getting infected.

Causes

There are various strains of E coli, but O157:H7 strain affects the lining of gastrointestinal tract. The toxic substance that released by these bacterial strains ruin the lining of stomach wall. E coli get into the human digestive system as an individual ingest contaminated water, food articles, under-cooked meat, unpasteurized milk etc. Direct contact with infected people can also be a reason.

Pathophysiology

Watery or bloody diarrhoea is caused by Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). They may be E. coli O157:H7 or non O157:H7 serotypes. They produce Shiga-like (which is responsible for haemolytic uremic syndrome/ HUS) toxins and is absorbed by the inflamed lining of intestinal wall. As a result, the function of endothelial cells is disrupted leading to platelet activation.

Diagnosis

Lab examination of stool for presence of E. coli.

Complications

Though rare, E coli infection may lead to Hemolytic uremic syndrome and is common among older adults and children.

Treatment

  1. coli infection usually relieved by its own. If it causes serious problems like dehydration, proper rest and re-hydration is needed. Anti-diarrhoeal medications are not recommended in this condition because they may interrupt the digestive mechanism. Antibiotics are also not preferred as they can worsen the complications. In case of complications like Hemolytic uremic syndrome, blood transfusion, IV fluids and dialysis can be adopted.

Ayurvedic concept

This can be correlated with conditions like Kaphaja krimi, pureeshaja krimi and Gara visha.

Nidana

Intake of ksheera, guda, tila, matsya, anupa mamsa, pistaanna, paramanna, ajeerna puti klinna sankeerna virudha asatmya bhojana are the nidanas of Krimi.

Poorvarupa

Shoola, sadana, annadwesha etc may appear as prodromal symptoms.

Samprapti

Krimi in the amashaya may move upward or downward leading to chardi or atisara, pain in abdomen, karshya etc.

Lakshana

Jwara, soola, sadana, atisara, brama and annadwesha.

Prognosis

The acute condition is sukhasadhya, whereas the chronic one with complication ma be krchra sadhya.

Chikilsa

Apakarshana (virechana, vamana), then prakriti vikhata (use of katu, tiktha, kasaya, kshara, ushna dravya; managing shleshma and pureesha) & then, nidana varjanam.

Commonly used medicines

Vidanga krishnadi Kashaya, Patoladi Kashaya, vidangarishta, Chavikasava, Panchakolasava, Krimighna churna, Vidanga churna, Ashta churna, Krimighna gulika, Vilwadi gutika, Dashangam gutika, Suvarna malini Vasant, Krimikutharam gutika, Vidanga louha.

Home remedies and behavioral changes

Powder of Muvila (Uraria picta) mixed in hot water can be taken in empty stomach. Pasted leaves of Durva (Cynodon dactylon) or Cyperus rotundus is also helpful. Avoid dairy products, caffeine, fatty food, viruddha ahara, food items that increase Kapha dosha, uncooked/ undercooked vegetables and meat. Use the fruits and vegetables after cleaning thoroughly.

Yoga

All the yogic postures that can improve the digestive power and immune power can be followed as a prevention and supportive therapy. They include Dhanurasana, Pavanamuktasana, Vajrasana, Ardhakatichakrasana, Ushtrasana etc. Yogic purificatory therapies like Vasti and vamana dhouti can help detoxify the stomach.

Basal cell carcinoma- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama

Ayurvedic Treatment for Basal cell carcinoma

Introduction

Basal cell carcinoma or in short, BCC is a nonmelanocytic skin cancer. It comes under the group of epithelial tumours that arise from basal cells. They are small, round cells seen in the lower layer of the epidermis. The prognosis for patients with BCC is excellent when diagnosed in early stages, but if the disease is in later stages, mortality rate is high. Approximately 85% of BCCs develop on the face, head including scalp included, and neck. But it can also develop on the trunk or extremities. Ver rarely though, they develop on the hands.

BCC tumours have the following characteristics:

  • Waxy papules of central depression
  • Pearly appearance
  • Erosion or ulceration mostly central with pigmentation
  • Bleeding when cut
  • Big tumours may have oozing and crust formations on them
  • Black, bluish or brown areas are seen with raised border
  • Translucent tumour
  • Telangiectasis on the surface
  • Slow growth

Tumours of BCC are classified on the clinicopathological basis.

  • Nodular – They are the most common cystic, pigmented, keratotic form of BCC. They are manifested as round, pearllike, flesh-coloured papules with telangiectasis.

  • Infiltrative – when the tumor infiltrates the dermis in the thin strands between the collagen fibers. In such cases, margins of tumour will be less clear.
  • Micronodular – They are not ulcerated mostly. They are seen as yellow-white when stretched. They are firm when touched, with a well-defined border
  • Morpheaform – They are white or yellow, waxy, sclerotic plaques that rarely ulcerate.  Flat with slight depression, they are fibrotic and firm,
  • Superficial – Mostly seen on the trunk or shoulders, they appear like an erythematous, patch or plaque often with a whitish scale with well-marked margins.

Causes of basal cell carcinoma

The exact cause of BCC is not known, but environmental and genetic factors are considered taking a role in the predisposition of BCC.

Pilosebaceous cysts or units are found related with the development of BCC. They are tumours mostly seen on areas with hair.

Some scholars say that BCCs develop as a result of pluripotential cells in the basal layer of the epidermis or follicular structures. These cells are continuously formed entire life time. They shape hair, sebaceous glands, and apocrine glands. Tumours develop from the epidermis in most cases but rarely arise from hair follicle root cells.

Treatment of carcinoma

Surgery

In most cases of BCC, Surgery is recommended. The following surgical procedures are done:

  • Electrodesiccation and curettage
  • Excisional surgery
  • Mohs micrographically controlled surgery
  • Cryosurgery

Other therapies include:

Radiation therapy – In people those who can not tolerate surgery, Radiation therapy is advised. BCC is radiosensitive in most cases.  It is also done in patients after surgery for a complete elimination of the tumour.

Photodynamic therapy – It is done as an extra or supporting therapy in conditions like:

  • Recurrent tumour with atrophied tissue and scar formation
  • Old and weak patients or patients with comorbidities
  • Tumours without clear margins or borders
  • Tumours in which difficult or extensive oculoplastic surgery is needed

Pharmacologic therapy include:

Topical

5-fluorouracil 5%

Imiquimod

Tazarotene

Oral

Hedgehog pathway inhibitors

Vismodegib

Sonidegib

Cemiplimab

Complications of medicine & treatment

Though having excellent outcome, chance of recurrence in the first year is very high. It may be found in other sites too. Regular check-ups and close watch are advised.

Preventive measures

Avoid factors like exposure to sun, ionizing radiation, arsenic ingestion, and tanning beds. The regular use of sun protection clothes and sunglasses with ultraviolet protection) while going out in the sun.

Ayurvedic Concept of Basal cell carcinoma

Cancer is a terrifying name in the modern society but it is explained in Ayurveda books written thousands of years ago. Though the term cancer or carcinoma was not coined, clinical presentations similar to the conditions are explained in detail. Carcinoma can be understood mostly under two terms Granthi & Arbuda which denote the non-inflammatory & inflammatory stages of carcinoma respectively in most cases. In some cases, vidradhi can also be correlated as carcinoma. Regarding basal cell carcinoma, it can be understood well in terms of Ayurveda as Granthi.

In Ayurveda, tumours are considered as granthi which are unwanted and abnormal growths which can develop wherever possible in the body. Ayurveda explains that the vitiated doshas travel from their sites throughout the body and get lodged where there are abnormality or damage in the circulatory channels (srotas). When the doshas cause granthi in the skin, it ccan be correlated with Basal cell carcinoma. In later stages, Arbuda or vidradhi can be the condition.

Unwholesome diet and lifestyle

Ayurvedic treatment for Brucellosis

The aim of Ayurvedic treatment in granthi is to remove and expel the kapha dosha blocking the normal functioning of Vaata. This will help the skin cells formation and its functioning in the normal way. To eliminate kapha, vamanam and nasyam are done if the patient is suitable. After clearing the obstruction in channels, treatment is given to enhance the skin formation and development in a normal way. Both internal medicines and external treatments are needed for a long time. In the first stage, the body should be cleared from Aama (metabolic toxic waste products accumulated in the body). This is done by diet restrictions, fasting, and medicines. Sedentary lifestyle & depressive mood should be changed into an active & enthusiastic one. Medicines are given to enhance the digestive fire or Agni. Internal medicines and diet with ushna-teekshna (hot, pungent & penetrating) properties are advised if there is no paaka or pus formation. For complete cure of the existing disease and prevention of recurrence, cleansing therapies called Ayurveda Panchakarma should be administered under expert supervision. The most suitable therapy and herbal medicines are decided after individual examination. Generally, it includes oil massage & intake of medicated ghee or oil as part of Snehana therapy. Then the body is allowed to sweat in Swedana therapy. After this, therapeutic emesis or Vamana should be done in young & strong patients.  For complete cleaning of the gastro-intestinal tract, therapeutic purgation or Virechana with herbal medicines or formulations should also be done. By this, aggravated Pitta dosha is pacified. In conditions where Vaata dosha is aggravated, therapeutic enema or Vastis should be done. This can be done either with herbal oils or decoction mixtures. Herbal powder massages or herbal paste applications (Udwartana & lepana) on the skin are also prescribed. In suitable patients, oil massage & herbal decoction baths are advised.

Commonly used internal medicines are:

        Varanadi kashayam

Pachanamrutam kashayam

Amruthotharam kashayam

Punarnavadi kashayam

Gugguluthikthakam kashayam

Aragwadhadi kashayam

Chest Pain- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama

Ayurvedic Treatment for Chest pain

Introduction

A person may experience many kinds of chest pains ranging from a sharp shooting pain to a dull ache, sometimes a burning pain, crushing pain etc. In certain case pain may start from chest region, spread upwards to the neck, jaw and even to the back side or to arm (arms). The causes may vary in person to person. Pain over the chest often alarms a serious problem but it may not always be a heart attack or something dangerous.

Itself as a symptom, chest pain may be caused by a number of issues. Not only heart related problems are the causative factor of chest pain but many a times it may be due to other reasons also. Heart related problems are the top most cause of chest pain, and is characterised by a vague uneasiness which may usually left un-noticed. The one which is linked with heart attacks or other serious heart problem may be presented along with shortness of breath, pressure/ tightness over chest region, cold sweats, nausea or vomiting and general weakness. A stabbing pain that spreads to the neck, jaw, shoulders, arm (arms) and back which usually becomes worse by exertion, fluctuating in nature denotes heart attack. Chest pain due to other health issues will be accompanied by distaste in mouth, regurgitation of food particles, dysphagia or tenderness over chest region. This kind of pain may be worsened by deep breathing or coughing, by changing positions and lasts for hours. Pain along with burning sensation behind the sternum may be connected with heart or stomach.

Causes of chest pain

There are many reasons of chest pain. The one which is related to heart may be due to angina, heart attack, aortic dissection and pericarditis. Stomach related issues like heart burn, disorders of pancreas and gall bladder or even difficulty in swallowing may account for chest pain. Locomotor related chest pain are often due to muscle soreness, costochondritis or injury to ribs. Pain associated with lungs are caused by pulmonary embolism, collapsed lung, pleurisy or pulmonary hypertension. It may also occur due to several other reasons like panic attack and Shingles (the latent infection of chickenpox).

Treatment of chest pain

As the reason behind a chest pain is different, its treatment also varies. Most of the time, it can be pacified by medications such as aspirin, artery relaxers, blood thinners, thrombolytic drugs, acid suppressing drugs or anti-depressants. Serious conditions may need surgical and other procedures like angioplasty and stent placement, bypass surgery, lung re-inflation and emergency dissection repair.

Complications of chest pain

Preventive measures of chest pain

Chest pain is preventable by avoiding the risk factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. Control the blood sugar level and blood pressure, ensure moderate physical activity such as walking or yoga, stick on to balanced diet preferably the locally available food, avoid consumption of saturated fats (red meet, processed food etc), take plenty of cardio-protective food like fruits, small fishes etc, avoid cold food items and pickles, increase the intake of protein rich food such as pulses.

Ayurvedic Concept of Chest pain

Ayurveda explains chest pain as Hrudroga. It is classified into five according to the Doshas involved and clinical manifestation, namely Vaatika Paittika Kaphaja Sannipatika and Krimija.

Vaatika hrudroga is explained as recurrent and severe pain that comes and goes in the chest, along with throbbing, feeling of emptiness, immediate grief, fear, intolerance to sound, tremors and stiffness as associated signs.

Paittika hrudroga is the chest pain & stiffness along with excess thirst, giddiness, fainting, burning sensation, sour belching, fatigue, vomiting of yellow bile, and fever as associated complaints.

Kaphaja hrudroga feels the chest as heavy as if a stone is placed inside, stiff and with cough, loss of digestive fire, excess spitting, sleep, lethargy, anorexia and fever as related complaints.

Sannipaataika hrudroga develops when all of the three doshas are imbalanced & causing Hrudroga. It shows the signs & symptoms of all the three doshas.

Krimija hridroga is said to be very severe as the area gets infested by microbes. Severe stabbing pain will be felt in the chest along with darkness of eyes, fainting, nausea, dryness of mouth & itching as associated problems. There will be excess and abnormal saliva production.

Ayurvedic Nidana of chest pain

Causative factors of Gulma roga – that which causes obstruction & abnormal movement of Vaata in the abdomen & chest

Ayurvedic treatment for chest pain

Management of chest pain depends upon many factors like the cause, age of the patient, associated diseases, physical strength, imbalanced Doshas etc.

Vaatika hrudroga is managed by the intake of medicated oils with medicinal salts & other herbal combinations. Swedana(sweating therapies) are also indicated in suitable cases that reduces the pain with an immediate effect.

In PAittika hrudroga, first line of treatment is Virechana(therapeutically induced purgation with herbal formulations). Here the medicine is added with Draksha, Ikshurasa, Sugar, honey etc. After the purgation, Peyadi krama (restricted diet) should be followed without causing aggression of Pitta. External and internal cleansing therapies indicated in chest injury & fever should also be administered. Once the digestive fire is normal, medicated ghee preparations are given internally.

Kaphaja hridroga is managed by sweating therapies(swedana) followed by Vamana(therapeutically induced emesis with herbal formulations. After the obstructions due to the Kapha is cleared specific herbal formulations are given internally along with Pathya diet.

Sannipatika hrudroga is managed according to the symptoms manifested in each case.

Krimi hrudroga needs immediate &emergency medical attention with Sodhana9cleansing therapies, Langhana(therapies that help reduce body weight), Paachana(therapies that help better diegestion, absorption and assimilation). Anti-microbial and anthelmintic herbal formulations are also advised in these cases.

Charcot Marie Tooth Disease- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama

Ayurvedic Treatment for Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

Introduction

These are a group of genetic disorders that cause peripheral nerve damage (in arms and legs). The condition which is also termed as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, causes loss of sensation mainly over feet, legs, arms and hands. The musculature of these parts will become weaker and thinner. The signs and symptoms can be evident from adolescence or early childhood, but may be delayed in some person.

Generally, the symptoms start on legs or feet. Weak legs and feet, frequent falls, impaired gait, reduced muscle bulk on calves and feet, decreased/ loss of sensation over legs and feet, high foot arches, footdrop, hammertoes etc are the usual signs and symptoms, though the severity is different from person to person. As a progressive disorder, the symptoms may spread to arms on a gradual manner.

Causes of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

It is a genetic condition and is caused by gene mutations in arms, legs, feet and hands which lead to destruction of nerve cells or myelin sheath resulting in interrupted signal transmission from brain to the peripheral nerves.

Family history is the major risk factor in Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Disease. Other diseases causing neuropathies (eg: diabetes) usually present with similar symptoms and these will definitely worsen the condition. Also, some medicines such as chemotherapy drugs can make the symptoms worse.

Treatment of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

As it is a genetic problem, it is of no cure. Pain medications are recommended in case of pain. Rehabilitation techniques like physiotherapy (stretching exercises) and occupational therapy are beneficial. Orthopaedic devices (leg and ankle braces or splints, boots, thumb splint etc) are useful for getting additional support. To correct your gait, shoe-inserts or customized shoes can be used. Surgery is an option for correcting foot deformities.

Complications of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

Most cases of CMT are not life-threatening or fatal. The severity of complication may vary from person to person. The major ones include abnormalities of foot, muscle weakness, difficulty in walking, chances of fall (bad signalling from brain to feet), injuries or infections to areas of body with less sensations and problem with swallowing or breathing if the related muscles are affected.

Preventive measures of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

In order to prevent the complications, do regular exercise, improve body stability (use a walker while walking), ensure proper lighting at night times to avoid falling. Foot care is very important. Regularly check for any calluses, wounds, ulcers and infections (these may be overlooked as there is no pain sensation to warn you). Neatly cut the nails regularly to avoid infections, use properly fitting shoes to protect the legs. Try to wear boots for ankle support. Customized shoes are also advised in the case of foot deformities like hammer toe.

Ayurvedic Concept of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

As the condition is a debilitating disease of the nervous as well as locomotor systems, the main Dosha involved here is Vaata. The deranged Vaata (either abnormally increased, decreased or blocked out of its normal route) causes structural deformities and functional anomalies in body parts especially extremities. The pathogenesis can happen in two ways, with or without the involvement of Kapha dosha. In teens or young adults, and in people with other debilitating neuropathic diseases like diabetes, metabolic waste products or Ama covers up or blocks the body channels including nerves & circulatory system. In chronic cases, the Vaata dosha alone manages to rule the pathogenesis with abnormal increase and derangement of itself, leading to muscular atrophy and nervous degeneration. Neuropathies are the deranged Vaata going to various parts of the body and causing Vaata kopa lakshanas like numbness and altered sensation.

Ayurvedic Nidana of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

Factors leading to Vaata or Kapha-Vaata vitiation

Sedentary lifestyle

Stress

Untimely and unhealthy food habits

Abnormal sleep schedule,

Habit of keeping awake at late night

Ayurvedic treatment for Charcot Marie Tooth Disease

The Ayurvedic management for each individual may vary according to the clinical presentation but the priority is to control and regulate to ensure a normalised Vaata in its normal course & functions. The herbal medicines, formulations and therapies are focused on removing the blocks in Vaata doha’s course in body channels and preventing its occurrence further.

Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies are administered under expert supervision, after considering the age & strength of the patient. Usage of herbal & medicated sesame oils and ghee preparations are advised first especially in Vaata alone is the vitiated Dosha or with Pitta association. After using such ghees & oils both as internal medicines & external therapies, sweat-inducing therapies are administered. By the combination of such oleation-sudation therapies, the metabolic wastes & toxins that cause obstruction to channels get melted and flow towards Koshtha (intestinal trat). This should be cleaned up and expelled from the body by Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies. The following therapies are used in most of the CMT cases for cleansing and detoxification of the body.

Vamana – therapeutic and induced vomiting with herbal formulations

Virechana – therapeutic and induced purgation with herbal formulations

Two types of Vasti – herbal enema procedures with various formulations

Nasya – herbal nasal drops

Diet, Yoga & Pranayama

People with CMT should be very careful about diet and regimen, as Vaata is very much depended on these factors. A healthy diet and stress-free daily life can help the angry Vaata under control, leading to less severe signs & symptoms. Diet rich in Calcium and micro vitamins, fibres and healthy fats are very important. But it is more important to eat according to the Agni and hunger schedule. Late breakfast and late dinner should be avoided like otherbad food habits like overeating.

Yoga is a way to heal all systems of the body and the body as a whole. Certain yoga postures along with mental & emotional balancing techniques can help improve the body’s own defence & healing mechanisms.

Side effect management of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease by Ayurveda

In many cases, medicines used for signs of CMT include steroids & others that are harmful when used long-term. Ayurveda can help in the detoxification of the body. Ayurvedic diet, lifestyle and medicines can also improve the body’s power to digest absorb and assimilate both food & medicines. In that way, the body with Ayurveda regimen will be stronger to withstand the adverse effects of both the disease and medications for it.
