SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIAPER RASH

• Bright red skin patches on the buttocks
• Inflammation on the affected skin area
• The skin patches are tender
• Warmth in the affected area

 CAUSES OF DIAPER RASH

• Prolonged exposure to urine or stool can irritate a baby’s sensitive skin
• Diarrhoea aggravates the condition
• Irritation from disposable diapers
• Bacterial or fungal skin infection
• Babies with sensitive skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis
• Overuse of antibiotics

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DIAPER RASH

Moist occlusion promotes an increase in the coefficient of skin friction. Skin hydration and an increase in skin pH result in impaired barrier function, and faecal enzymes begin to attack the skin, further degrading its normal ability to cope with its environment. Skin in this weakened state is susceptible to a variety of biological, chemical, and physical insults that can cause or aggravate diaper dermatitis.

• History taking from the parents
• Proper examination
• Laboratory tests to find out the microbial infection.

• Keep the area clean and dry
• Antifungal creams
• Creams with zinc oxide
• Steroid creams
