Causes
Allergic rhinitis (Hay fever) occurs when the immune system identifies a usually harmless airborne substance as an allergen and then responds to it by releasing histamines or other chemicals into the bloodstream. These substances cause allergic symptoms. The triggering factor in each season varies.
Some of the most common indoor allergens that can trigger your winter allergies where the climate is very cold include airborne dust particles. dust mites. pet dander, etc.
Diagnosis
The symptoms usually occur in the concerned season and so the diagnosis becomes easy. Doing physical examination of ears, nose, and throat may help to diagnose the allergy. To confirm blood tests for serum IgE, skin tests can also be done.
Treatments
Treatment includes the avoidance of substances that triggers allergic responses. Decongestants and antihistamines are the choices of drugs. Immunotherapy can be suggested for a complete cure. Lactobacillus acidophilus, the “friendly” bacteria found in yogurt and spirulina, a type of blue-green algae are believed to be the alternative treatments that are beneficial in seasonal allergies.
Prognosis
Symptoms usually subside by the treatments and avoidance of exposure to allergens. But drastic seasonal changes trigger the allergy.

People with asthma may worsen the symptoms in the wet cold season. The symptoms worsen quickly following heavy downpours.
