  • Enlargement of organs
  • Protruding jaw
  • Physical deformity
  • Large tongue
  • Bulging chest

CAUSES OF ACROMEGALY

  • A pituitary tumour (adenoma) is the major cause of acromegaly

 

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ACROMEGALY

Due to the development of pituitary adenoma, more growth hormones secreted from the pituitary gland. Excess growth hormones accelerated enlargement of organs and excess bone growth. This is most commonly occurring in adulthood.

DIAGNOSIS OF ACROMEGALY

  • Diagnosis through clinical features
  • Physical examination
  • Blood tests – to measure the level of hormones
  • Growth hormone suppression test
  • MRI scan
  • CT scan

 

TREATMENTS FOR ACROMEGALY

  • Growth hormone lowering medications
  • Surgical removal of pituitary tumours
  • Radiation
  • Treatment for underlying pathology

 

PROGNOSIS OF ACROMEGALY

  • Symptoms of acromegaly are manageable with medications. If it is untreated leads to complications.

COMPLICATIONS OF ACROMEGALY

  • Acromegaly affects different systems of the body. The mortality rate increased because of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, or respiratory comorbidities.

  • In Ayurveda acromegaly is managed based on the symptoms.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF ACROMEGALY

The symptoms of acromegaly are aggravated by;

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, incompatible food
  • Suppression of natural urges.
  • Hyper or hypo functioning of agni

 

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF ACROMEGALY

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness

Hyper or hypo functioning of jataragni affects dhatu agni leads to symptoms of acromegaly. Along with this symptoms of asthi dhatu vridhi also manifested.

YOGA FOR ACROMEGALY

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
