Congenital defects are the diseases of a developing foetus. It may be the defects of genetic structure, intrauterine environment, defects in morphology or a chromosomal anomaly. The diseases of the heart developed in a child by birth are termed congenital heart disease. The mitral valve is present between the left heart chambers. Congenital mitral valve anomalies are included under congenital heart defects.

The general signs and symptoms of congenital mitral valve anomalies are:

  • Genetic factors – a chromosomal anomaly, multifactorial inheritance

  • Taking certain medications during pregnancy

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CONGENITAL MITRAL VALVE ANOMALIES 

Due to the above-mentioned causes, simple or complex types of congenital mitral valve diseases occur. Fused valve flaps, thick valve flaps, narrowing of the opening, and defects in valve closure are the common valve defects.

Common congenital mitral valve anomalies are:

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – do with special care

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
