CAUSES OF CRANIAL ARTERITIS

The exact cause is not known. The risk factors are;

  • Ageing
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CRANIAL ARTERITIS

The pathophysiology of cranial arteritis is not well established. Due to the causative factors, the immune system abnormally attacks the wall of the artery leading to inflammation of the arteries (arteritis/vasculitis).

DIAGNOSIS OF CRANIAL ARTERITIS

  • Proper history taking
  • Imaging techniques like CT scan and MRI
  • C-reactive protein
  • Complete blood test
  • Doppler ultrasound
  • Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)

TREATMENTS FOR CRANIAL ARTERITIS

  • Medications – corticosteroids

PROGNOSIS OF CRANIAL ARTERITIS

  • No cure for cranial arteritis. The symptoms are manageable with medications.

  • Frequent attacks of headaches interfere with the daily activities and lifestyle
  • Stroke
  • Vision loss
  • Aortic aneurysm

  • In Ayurveda, cranial arteritis can be managed based on the treatment of “shirasoola” and “jwara”.
  • As per ayurveda the types of shirasoola are vatika, paithika, kaphaja, sannipathika, krimija suryavarta, anandavata, ardhavabhedaka, shankhaka

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF CRANIAL ARTERITIS

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, dry, acrid, cold food
  • Virudhahara – incompatible food
  • Suppression of natural urges

  • Dull ache anywhere in the head

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • Due to the causative factors, doshas are excessively aggravated.
  • The aggravated doshas reside in the head and produce pain and other symptoms.
  • The aggravated doshas produce agnimandya and jwara.

  • Avoid food items which produce vata , pitta dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, acrid, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, cow’s milk
  • Practice regular exercise
  • Oil massage on affected area advised. Which alleviates vata dosha
  • Take proper rest.

 

YOGA FOR CRANIAL ARTERITIS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
