  • Delay in gross motor development
  • Outward turning of legs
  • Legs appear to differ in length

CAUSES OF CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

  • Defective formation of hip joint
  • Breech presentation
  • Family history of congenital hip dislocation
  • Low level of amniotic fluid in the womb

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

Due to the above-mentioned causes, abnormal growth of the hip joint occurs during fetal development. This is also associated with ligamentous laxity in the hip joint.

  • Palpation – in and around the hip joint

  • Ultrasound

TREATMENTS FOR CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

  • Pavlik harness – soft brace that holds the joint firmly
  • A few cases may require surgery.

PROGNOSIS OF CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

  • Prognosis is based on the degree of congenital hip dislocation.

  • Nerve damage
  • Cartilage damage
  • Stability problems

  • In Ayurveda, congenital hip dislocation in children is occurring due to beeja dushti, arthava dushti or garbhashaya dushti.
  • According to Ayurveda, it is considered as ‘sandhi vislesha’ of the hip joint.
  • Generally, ayurveda therapies are given to older children and adults.

  • No specific premonitory symptoms

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

  • Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
  • The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moved greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
  • The aggravated vata resides in the hip joint during fetal development and produces different kinds of abnormalities in asthi, tarunasthi, snayu, kandara etc leading to abnormal growth of the hip joint.

  • Massage the area for 15 minutes ( NOT too much pressure )

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR CONGENITAL HIP DISLOCATION

  • Avoid food items which produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, cow’s milk
  • Avoid long walking, and heavy exercises which further aggravate the conditions.
  • Oil massage on affected area advised. Which alleviates vata dosha
  • Take proper rest.
