Nisothamadi kashayam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine for many types of inflammatory skin diseases. It has such a potent wound-healing action that it can be used in diabetic ulcers and even leprosy.

Benefits of Nisothamadi kashayam

It is used in all types of skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, scabies, acne, pustules, blisters, vitiligo etc. Being a blood purifier, this medicine helps in healing skin problems. It is also found efficient in removing scars and improving complexion.

It improves functions of circulatory system.

It is useful in skin disease with itching and burning sensations. Kapha dosha is the major cause of itching and pitta dosha can cause burning sensation. Nisothamadi kashayam being Kapha-pitta hara is best choice for this condition.

It can be used in kapha vitiated conditions like whitish and coated tongue, numbness over extremities, itchy skin rashes and oozing skin.

Many of the herbs in Nisothamadi kashayam have anti- diabetic and anti-inflammatory actions. So, it can be used in diabetic foot and other diabetic complications.

It is found useful in treating varicose veins with skin irritations like itching and numbness. This combination helps in healing wounds and ulcers associated with varicose veins. Once the wounds are healed, Nisothamadi kashayam restores the normal skin over the scar tissue.

Ingredients of Nisothamadi kashayam

Turmeric

 

Nisa Curcuma longa L.

 

 Turmeric is used to help with heartburn or bowel problems like diarrhoea, intestinal gas, and bloating. It is famous for its anti-cancerous and detoxification effects. It is widely used in skin diseases. Some may use it to help with memory problems or problems with the liver or gallbladder. It may also help to lessen swelling and help with signs of arthritis. It has marked anti-inflammatory and antiseptic action.

Uthama/Vara /Triphala -a group of fruits of 3 drugs namely,

Chebulic myrobalan Pathya Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana and a member of an important group, Triphala. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.

Beleric myrobalan, Bahera Aksha Terminalia bellirica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

 

A very good healer of gastric diseases, common cold, leukoderma and also cures digestive disorders. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions. It is one of the important ingredients in triphala, an Ayurvedic formulation. Other properties for which it is used are as health tonic and as rejuvenator. It is used in treatment of piles also.

Amla, Indian gooseberry Dhatri Emblica officinalis GAERTN.

 

 

Amla exhibits strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most important plants in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system as well as in other traditional health systems for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for anti-diabetic effect. It is a part of the famous group of drugs called Triphala. 

Margosa, Neem Nimba Azadirachta indica A. JUSS.

 The important health benefits of this drug include its ability to treat dandruff, soothe irritation, protect the skin, boost the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also speeds up wound healing, treats gastric conditions, slows the aging process, improves hair and scalp health, maintains sexual organ health, has anti-cancer potential, and helps treat diabetes. 

Pointed gourd Patolamoola Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.

 It has anti-diabetic, hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and wound-healing properties. It has anti-oxidants. It is useful in lowering cholesterol and skin diseases. It acts as a laxative.

Indian gentian Thiktha/Bhoonimba

 

Swertia chirata (ROXB. EX. FLEM.) KAR.

 It is an important herb used in Ayurveda for the treatment of fever, inflammation, skin diseases, intestinal parasites and diabetes. It has hepato-protective action also. It is used in treatment of piles, ulcers and fevers.

Calamus root/sweet flag Ugra/Vacha Acorus calamus L.

 The root is aromatic. It has stimulant, emetic, expectorant, emmenagogue, aphrodisiac, laxative, diuretic, antispasmodic, carminative, and anthelmintic properties. It is slightly tonic, and excitant, and forms a useful adjunct to other tonics and stimulants. It may be used in cases of flatulent colic, atonic dyspepsia etc.

Indian madder Manjishtha/ Lohitayashtika Rubia cordifolia L.

 It is a blood purifier. Used in the treatments of almost all skin diseases. It improves complexion. It enhances the liver functions.  Beneficial in diarrhoea and eye diseases.

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, Nisothamadi kashayam has 9 ingredients in equal quantity.

All these ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take equal quantity of all ingredients in dried & crushed form in an earthen pot. Now add 16 times clean water into it. Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into one by eighth of the initial quantity. Make sure to mix it in between with a wooden ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Once the quantity is reduced to one by eighth of the initial amount of water, remove the vessel from the fire. Squeeze and drain through a clean white cloth. Collect the decoction in a clean vessel and discard the solid waste. Drink the mild warm decoction.

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga margas.

Nisothamadi kashayam is Kaphapithahara and anulomana.

It acts on bahya, aabhyanthara and madhyama rogamargas

Dosage and Usage of Nisothamadi kashayam

Dosage: two Pala.

Usage:

Kashayam is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and aahaararasa is formed well.

Usage of kashayam with prescribed prakshepadravyas according to the condition of disease and the patient gives the best results mostly.

Here

Prakshepadravya depends on the condition. It enhances the penetration action and increases the potency of kashayam to remove obstruction in the channels.

Exercises and Yoga.

As Nisothamadi kashayam targets mainly blood,skin, and wound healing following exercises and specific yoga asanas like Ardhamathsyentra asanam, Halasanam, Vakrasanam, Dhanurasanam etc recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within and with surroundings.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Red meat, fried non-veg items, and sea foods

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods and spicy food- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

  • To be added

Light meals and easily digestible foods

Green gram, soups, buttermilk boiled with turmeric, ginger and curry leaves

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

Behaviour:

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Be active.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid forcing or holding of natural urges like urine, faeces, vomiting, hiccups etc.

Avoid Stress and emotional imbalance as much as possible. 

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

People with IBS or a sensitive stomach may develop diarrhoea when not supervised by a qualified Ayurveda physician.
