Cervical Cancer- Ayurvedic Treatment, Diet, Exercises, Research Papers, Yoga & Pranayama

Introduction

Cervical cancer is the cancer that affects the cells of the cervix. Infection with various strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitting infection, is the major reason.

During the early stages, there may not always be any signs or symptoms. In advanced stages, the woman may have abnormal bleeding per vagina after coitus/ in between periods/ after attaining menopause, pelvic pain, dyspareunia and profuse watery/ bloody discharge with or without foul smell from vagina.

Causes of Cervical cancer

Cancer is caused by mutation to DNA of cervical cells, their accumulation to form a tumour and metastasis to nearby cells. Not all individuals with HPV infection develops Cervical cancer. Environmental and lifestyle factors also play a role in the manifestation of this condition.

Cervical carcinoma may be of two types, squamous cell carcinoma (most common) and adenocarcinoma. Sometimes, both the types are seen simultaneously.

Being sexually active in young ages, having multiple sexual partners, weak immune system, other sexually transmitting infections, smoking and drugs preventing miscarriage (diethylstilbestrol) are the major risk factors. Repeated vaginal delivery or prolonged use of oral contraceptives by women with HPV infection also increase the incidence.

Treatment of Cervical cancer

Treatment for cervical cancer may differ according to the stage of cancer or associated health issues. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of the three can be adopted. Surgical removal of cancer cells, trachelectomy (removal of cervix) and hysterectomy (removal of cervix and uterus) are being done. For locally advanced cervical cancer, radiation therapy is used in combination with chemotherapy. It can also be recommended in post-surgical recurrence. Targeted drug therapy (in advanced cases), immunotherapy and palliative care as a support are other options.

Ayurvedic Concept of Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is a Yoni vyapad(disease inside the vagina). There will be various signs & symptoms like Yonisrava(vaginal discharge)  Yonisoola (pain in the vagina) yonidourgandhya(foul smell in the vagina) or excessive bleeding. Cancer is depicted as Arbuda or Granthi in Ayurveda. Both are characterised by an unwanted growth or tumour confined to an area but Arbuda may show signs in other sites in the body as well. Cervical cancer is considered as Yoni Arbuda or Yoni granthi explained in Ayurveda. All the diseases of vagina are having an involvement of deranged Vaata dosha & cancer itself is an abnormally and out of control stage of Vaata dosha. As a tumour there will be associated Kapha dosha but in erosive stage, Pitta dosha will be more dominant.
