Varadi kashayam is an Ayurvedic medicine for obesity and hyperlipidaemia. It can be used in any disease where the fat metabolism is impaired. It is beneficial in reducing bodyweight and hyperlipidaemia.

 

Benefits of Varadi kashayam

 

It helps reduce obesity, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia.

It is used to treat many diseases with ama in abdomen or all over the body. It reverses the pathology of many auto-immune diseases if used in the early stage of disease pathology.

This formulation does Rookshana in the body and helps to absorb unwanted kleda (moisture content) and regulates water and electrolyte balance. It is useful in some cases of swelling and water retention, too.

It works as anthelmintic. Also, it is beneficial in Kapha-dominant anaemia.

It is used for many comorbidities in diabetic persons.

It is found beneficial in atherosclerosis.

Ingredients of Varadi kashayam

 

Vara (Triphala) -a group of fruits of 3 drugs namely,

 

Chebulic myrobalan Pathya Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD.

 

It is one of the main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana drugs. It is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial anti-fungal anti-viral anti-diabetic anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer and wound-healing properties.

 

 

 

Beleric myrobalan, Bahera Aksha Terminalia bellirica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

 

 

A very good healer of gastric diseases, common cold, leukoderma and also cures digestive disorders. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions.Other properties for which it is used are as health tonic and as rejuvenator. It is used in treatment of piles also.

 

Amla, Indian gooseberry Dhatri Emblica officinalis GAERTN.

 

 

 

Amla exhibits strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most important plants in the traditional Ayurvedic medical system as well as in other traditional health systems for immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for anti-diabetic effect.

 

Indian kino tree Asana Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.

 

It is used as a cooling external application for headache and inflammations on skin and joints. It is anti-pyretic, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac. It is used in the treatment of ulcers and also in mental aberrations.

 

Ceylon leadwort Agni/ Chitraka Plumbago zeylanica L.

 

 

 

It aids digestion and increases appetite. It has anti-inflammatory action. It can also be used in liver diseases.

 

Aya:patra or thin sheets of Iron.

 

 

Turmeric

 

Nisa Curcuma longa L.

 

 

 

Turmeric is used to help with heartburn or bowel problems like diarrhoea, intestinal gas, and bloating. It is famous for its anti-cancerous and detoxification effects. It is widely used in skin diseases. Some may use it to help with memory problems or problems with the liver or gallbladder. It may also help to lessen swelling and help with signs of arthritis. It has marked anti-inflammatory and antiseptic action.

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, Varadi kashayam has 7 ingredients.

All the ingredients other than Aya:patra should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take equal quantity of all ingredients in dried & crushed form in an earthen pot. Now add 16 times clean water into it. Add thin Aya:patra into the pot. Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into one by eighth of the initial quantity. Make sure to mix it in between with a wooden ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Once the quantity is reduced to one by eighth of the initial amount of water, remove the vessel from the fire. Squeeze and drain through a clean white cloth. Collect the decoction in a clean vessel and discard the solid waste. Drink the cooled decoction adding HONEY to it.

 

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga margas.

Varadi kashayam is Kapha-Pittahara and rookshana.

It acts on aabhyantara rogamarga.

 

Dosage and Usage of Varadi kashayam

Dosage: two Pala.

Usage:

Kashayam is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and aahaararasa is formed well.

Usage of kashayam with prescribed prakshepadravyas according to the condition of disease and the patient gives the best results mostly.

 

Exercises and Yoga.

As Varadi kashayam targets mainly drying up excess moisture and fat tissues, following regular exercises and specific yoga asanas like suryanamaskra, pavanamuktasana, vajrasana, bhujangasana etc for whole body stretching and balance are recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within and with surroundings.

Exercises for diabetes and obesity

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

Food with excess oil and fat.

Sweet items like sugar, jaggery etc.

junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Light meals and easily digestible foods

Green gram, soups, buttermilk boiled with turmeric, ginger and curry leaves, honey.

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc

Eat food only when you are hungry. Avoid over-eating

Behaviour:

Avoid sitting continuously for a long time.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Be active.

Avoid stress.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid using air conditioner for long time. Let the body sweat.

Side effects and contraindications

Contraindication

Conditions in which the amount of iron is abnormally high in blood, Hemochromatosis.
