Causes

Pathophysiology
At the time of acute bronchitis, the cells lining the bronchial wall get irritated leading to the edema and hyperemia of the mucous membrane. The bronchial mucilary function gets diminished. Subsequently, the air passages get clogged by debris and the irritation again increases. In response to this thick mucus gets secreted which leads to the characteristic cough in bronchitis.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of allergic bronchitis is done by physical examination, history taking of signs and symptoms. Sputum examination, serum IgE, lung function tests, etc. are also done to confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, chest X-rays are also advised.
Treatments
The treatment principle includes those which open the airways and making breathing easier.
- Bronchodilators- Short-acting bronchodilators which include ipratropium, albuterol, levalbuterol, etc., and long-acting bronchodilators like tiotropium, salmeterol, formoterol, etc., can be used.
- Steroids are used to reduce airway obstruction.
- Oxygen therapy
- Breathing exercises for lung tissue rehabilitation.
