ARDS (Acute respiratory distress syndrome) is the rapid onset of inflammation and fluid collection in the lungs. This condition is also known as the wet lung.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ARDS

Associated symptoms are;

  • Breathing difficulty
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid breathing
  • Bluish skin
  • Fever
  • Chest discomfort
  • Fatigue

CAUSES OF ARDS

  • Infection and sepsis
  • Chronic pneumonia
  • Inhalation of smoke and fumes
  • Chest injuries
  • Overdosing of certain medications

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ARDS

The above-mentioned causes inflammation of lung tissue and the fluid accumulation that occurs in the air sacs leads to breathing difficulty and other symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS OF ARDS

  1. EXAMINATIONS

 Auscultation – when listening to the chest with a stethoscope, the doctor may hear abnormal breathing sounds.

  • X – rays
  • Lung function tests
  • CT Scan – chest
  • Laboratory tests – to find out the underlying pathology
  • Oxygen saturation of the blood

TREATMENTS FOR ARDS

PROGNOSIS OF ARDS

  • Prognosis is based on the stage of the disease, duration and condition of the patient

  • In Ayurveda, ARDS is considered a medical condition that occurs in the pranavaha srothas.
  • ARDS can be correlated as a symptom of swasa.

  • Exposure to dust and smoke
  • Residing in a cold place – seeta sthana
  • Use of cold water- seetambu sevana

  • Heat application on the chest area by a towel dipped with hot water
  • Steam inhalation

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR ARDS

  • Avoid food items that produce kapha, vataa dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because kapha, vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid a heavy diet at bedtime.
  • Avoid drinking water immediately after food.
  • Avoid heavy exercises.

YOGA FOR ARDS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – cleans the respiratory passage

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
