SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Fainting
- Rapid pulse
- Heart murmur
- Ankle swelling
CAUSES OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Congenital heart defects
- Rheumatic fever
- Endocarditis
- Connective tissue diseases
- Autoimmune diseases
- Age-related valve diseases
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
In aortic valve regurgitation, the valve between the left ventricle and the aorta doesn’t close properly, which causes leakage of blood backward into the left ventricle. This causes the left ventricle to hold more amount of blood, leads to enlargement of the ventricle.
DIAGNOSIS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Proper history taking
- Physical examination – Auscultation
- Electrocardiogram
- Echocardiogram
- Chest X-ray
TREATMENTS FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Aortic valve replacement surgery
PROGNOSIS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Prognosis is based on the severity of symptoms of aortic valve regurgitation and underlying diseases.
COMPLICATIONS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Frequent fainting spells
- Heart failure
- Aortic valve regurgitation may become fatal
AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION AND AYURVEDA
- In Ayurveda, aortic valve regurgitation falls under ‘hridroga’
- Symptoms can be managed based on Vata vyadhi chikilsa. According to Ayurveda, the heart functions controlled by ‘vyanavayu’
NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
The risk factors are;
- Excess consumption of ununctuous, dry, salty, cold food
- Excessive physical exercise.
- Suppression of natural urges.
PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Palpitations – hridrava
SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Vata, pitta and kapha dosha move through all channels of circulation. Due to the subtle nature of vata it impels the remaining two doshas.
- The aggravated vata having provoked these two doshas, exacerbated and fills up the empty channels and moves greatly inside them or by getting enveloped by the other doshas.
- The aggravated vata resides in the heart, affects its normal function.
LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Urasula – chest pain
- Palpitations – hridrava
- Breathing difficulty – srama swasa
AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Symptoms are manageable – yapya roga
CHIKITSA- AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
AYURVEDIC SAMANA TREATMENT FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Gandharvahasthadi kashayam
- Arogyavardhini vati
- Laghusuteshekhara rasa
- Brahmi vati
- Aswagandha churna
- Brihat Nayopayam Kashayam
- Partharishtam

- Parthalesunadi Tablet
AYURVEDIC SHODHANA TREATMENT FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Virechana – mild purgation
- Vasthi – medicated enema (to control vata)
COMMONLY USED AYURVEDIC MEDICINES FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
Internal administration
- Gandharvahasthadi kashayam
- Arogyavardhini vati
- Laghusuteshekhara rasa
- Brahmi vati
- Brihat Nayopayam Kashayam
- Partharishtam
- Shiva Gulika
- Parthalesunadi Tablet
HOME REMEDIES FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Sleeping for 8hrs
DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Avoid food items that produce vata dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid heavy exercises which further aggravate the conditions.
- Oil massage on the head is advised. Which alleviates vata dosha
- Take proper rest.
YOGA FOR AORTIC VALVE REGURGITATION
- Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
- Savasana – relax the body and mind
- Balasana
- Bhujangasana
