SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION

CAUSES OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Repeated exposure to sunlight
  • Insulin resistance.
  • Influence of hormones
  • Certain medications
  • Endocrine disorders

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

Due to overexposure to sunlight or other factors the skin pigment melanin content increases, that found as tan or brown spots particularly on the face.

  • Inspection of the skin by a dermatologist

  • Laboratory tests – to detect the underlying pathology

PROGNOSIS OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Prognosis is based on the stage of facial pigmentation, duration and condition of the patient
  • Some pigmentation may indicate malignant skin cancer.

COMPLICATIONS OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Risk factor for the development of melanoma

FACIAL PIGMENTATION AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, facial pigmentation falling under ‘vyanga’.
  • According to Ayurveda, twakrogas are known by the general term Kushta. Vyanga is one of the types of Kshudra Kushta. General medicines used for the treatment of skin diseases (kushta) are effective in facial pigmentation.

 NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Excess consumption of dry, oily, unctuous food
  • Vitiation of dosha and dhatus
  • Exposure to sunlight

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Brownish skin spots or patches

In the pathogenesis of vyanga, tridoṣas (vāta, pitta and kapha) are involved along with rasa and rakta dhatu.

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid exposure to dust, smoke, sunlight

 

YOGA FOR FACIAL PIGMENTATION 

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind  and provide overall immunity and healthy skin

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
