PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF RECTOVAGINAL FISTULA

Due to the above-mentioned causes, fistula formation occurs between the rectum and vagina. Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease are a well-known cause of intestinal fistulisation. Radiation causes long-term chronic tissue inflammation with poor healing and repair processes. Therefore, fistulae caused by radiation manifest after a lag period from radiation exposure. Due to this fistula formation, the contents of the rectum passes through the vagina.

Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
