SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF RENAL LITHIASIS

  • Severe abdominal or flank pain
  • Back pain
  • Increased Frequency of micturition

  • High calcium diet
  • Dehydration

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF RENAL LITHIASIS 

Due to the above-mentioned causes, saturation and supersaturation of urine occurs, leads to nucleation, crystal growth and aggregation, crystal retention and stone formation.  

DIAGNOSIS OF RENAL LITHIASIS

  • History taking
  • Physical examination
  • Urine analysis
  • Imaging techniques – USG scan, CT scan, MRI scan
  • Blood investigations

TREATMENTS FOR RENAL LITHIASIS 

  1. MEDICATIONS              – Narcotics,

– Nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug

– Diuretics.

  1. MEDICAL PROCEDURES – Extracorporeal shock wave therapy

– Ureteroscopic stone removal

– Laser lithotripsy.

  1. SUPPORTIVE CARE – Increase fluid intake,

-Low calcium intake

-Low protein intake.

PROGNOSIS OF RENAL LITHIASIS

  • Prognosis is based on the type of stone, size of stone and condition of the patient

COMPLICATIONS OF RENAL LITHIASIS

  • Untreated renal lithiasis may lead to complications like damage to the kidney

  • Renal lithiasis is the disease affecting the mootravaha srothas.

  • Excess consumption of ununctuous, salty food
  • Suppression of urge for urination

  • Heat application on the lower abdomen by a towel dipped with hot water to relieve pain associated with calculi.
  • Intake of an appropriate quantity of water

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR RENAL LITHIASIS

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Drinking water boiled with gokshura.

YOGA FOR RENAL LITHIASIS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and gets relief from the discomfort associated with renal lithiasis

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
