PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF VALLEY FEVER

Pathogenesis refers both to the mechanism of infection and to the mechanism by which disease develops. Coccidioides fungi are most commonly found in the soil and their spores are circulating in the air. From the air, the spores enter the lungs through the airway and spread to other organs. Valley fever can spread directly by contact with an infected person. Valley fever spread through equipment shared with the infected person.

VALLEY FEVER AND AYURVEDA

According to the Ayurveda, anyone who has developed an imbalance in “doshas,” and has thereby weakened their immune system, may be subject to a fungal infection which is considered a symptom of that imbalance. Valley fever is managed based on jwara, kasa, swasa chikilsa.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF VALLEY FEVER

  • Imbalance of doshas
  • Vitiation of dhatus
  • Reduced immunity -vyadhi kshamatwam
  • Agantu factors – infections

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF VALLEY FEVER

  • Fever – jwara

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF VALLEY FEVER

A healthy individual has a strong immune system and, therefore, it will be difficult for microbial infection to take hold. Balance in dosha, dhatu and agni provide a strong and well-functioning immune system capable of defending against microbial infection. Fungi invade the body when there is a defect in the immune system.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF VALLEY FEVER

  • Jwara – fever
  • Kasa – cough
  • Swasa – breathing difficulty
  • Shirasula – headache
  • Sandhi sula – joint pain

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF VALLEY FEVER

  • Sadhyasadhyata (prognosis) is based on the extent of fungal infection and the severity of the symptoms.

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
