SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FELON

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain

CAUSES OF FELON

  • Bacterial infection – Staphylococcus aureus

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FELON

Felon is commonly occurring due to bacterial infections. Bacterial infection in the tip of the finger leads to the formation of a pocket of pus (or abscess) that is very painful as it expands. If the infection spreads to the entire finger there is a chance to block the blood vessels leads to permanent damage to the finger.

DIAGNOSIS OF FELON

  • Felon is diagnosed by the proper inspection of the site.
  • A gram stain and culture of discharge or drainage.

TREATMENTS FOR FELON

  • Antibiotics for infections
  • Incision and drainage

PROGNOSIS OF FELON

  • Felon is curable in the early stages
  • Untreated felon leads to complications

COMPLICATIONS OF FELON

  • If the inspection spreads to the entire finger then permanent damage to the finger tissues may occur.

FELON AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, a felon can be managed based on the treatment of ‘dushta vrana’.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF FELON

  • Aganthu factors – infections
  • Excess vitiation of doshas and dhatus
  • Obstruction in the raktavaha srothas

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF FELON

  • Skin redness and swelling

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF FELON

Due to the causative factors, doshas become vitiated and further vitiates the rakta dhatu. This causes paka(inflammation) of tissues leads to dushtavrana .

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FELON

  • Sopha – swelling
  • Twak vivarnatha – reddish skin discolourations
  • Jwara – fever
  • Srava – discharges
  • Vrana – ulcer

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF FELON

  • Prognosis is krichra sadhya – curable in early stages with proper ayurvedic medications

 CHIKITSA- AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR FELON

Ayurvedic local treatment for felon

  • Lepa – dasanga lepa

AYURVEDIC SAMANA TREATMENT FOR FELON

  • Sanjeevani vati
  • Nishakatakadi kashaya – patient with diabetes

 AYURVEDIC SHODHANA TREATMENT FOR FELON

  • Virechana – purgation
  • Raktamokshana – leeching

COMMONLY USED AYURVEDIC MEDICINES FOR FELON

Internal administration

 HOME REMEDIES FOR FELON

  • Massage the surrounding area to enhance the blood circulation

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR FELON

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold, acrid, sour and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Intake of proper amounts of fluids
  • Towels are not shared with others

YOGA FOR FELON

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam – calms the mind and gets relief from irritations of felon

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
